From the streets of Melbourne to the bowels of Westminster, the delicate balance between life and death that is so painstakingly maintained by the reapers of The Order of Dark and Light is being tested by the return of an ancient threat. Tensions are rising within the hidden world of The Shadowlands and if this threat is not contained war will be inevitable. And the destruction of the human world is bound to follow in its wake.
Amidst this tension, eighteen year-old Sachi Manning is struggling to cope with the grief and guilt that has plagued her ever since her best friend was murdered six months earlier—that is, until she spots him seemingly alive and well and being held at scythe point by a hooded figure who looks more like a GQ model than the Grim Reaper.
Sachi shouldn’t be able to see through the glamours that shield Shadowlanders from the human world, so the reaper in question wants some answers. And so begins the craziest couple of weeks of Sachi’s life as she is drawn into a world of mysteries, magic, monsters, and mayhem, encountering dragons, faeries, soul-sucking demons, not-so-grim reapers, and even the Horseman of Death.
With a mix of heart, humour and hair-raising action, Out of the Shadows is the adventure of an afterlifetime, perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare and Paula Weston.

This is an amazing book! I love the genre to start with, so I was very interested to see what this author's take would be on "otherworldly creatures" and what kind of overall trajectory this book and the entire series would have. I found myself reminded of the Lana Harvey Reaper series, but this book and series are an entirely new spin on reapers, Death, demons, angels, Beelzebub, and all sort of ancient mythical entities.I could tell right away that this book was written by someone Australian. Besides the story taking place in Melbourne, there are a lot of Australian references that are very obvious (vegemite) and others that are a bit subtler (take away instead of take out.) Still, though, those differences won't leave readers confused on the important details of the story. It just keeps the story very real.
Speaking of being real, the dialogue was very natural, very real. You definitely feel like you're a voyeur in the background, watching these characters interact. It's extremely modern. There are a hundred current pop culture references and even some from the '90s. I recognized where they all came from. I felt like one of my friends had written this book which was so awesome. I think I'm exactly the target audience for this book. I love the genre. I love and so am familiar with so many of the entertainment references (LOTR, Supernatural, Harry Potter, Run DMC, Deadliest Catch) that it felt like the book was written for me. That's exactly what will create a loyal reader. I kept thinking that I wanted this to be a movie so badly because there's a whole generation of '90s kids out there who will get all these references and who love this sort of story.
The book was exactly what I wanted it to be without knowing any more about what it was beyond the description of it on its Amazon page to start with. I was intrigued by the genre and the description, and then, as I got into it, I was immediately drawn in by how relatable the characters were. I found it incredibly humorous. Moss is super entertaining. Sachi has spunk and sass. Julien is the straight-laced product of the 19th century England he grew up in who's uncharacteristically fumbling along the way with the girl. The story is all so well-constructed and the characters are so well-developed, it's easy to fall in love with the story. Honestly, I read more than half the book in one sitting because I loved delving deeper and deeper into the background of the Shadowlands. And, I even found myself floored at the revelation of who Mira had fallen in love with. Mind blown. Awesome! I love when a story can surprise me and keep me on my toes and make me feel really invested. And, damn, I need there to be more to Julien and Sachi's relationship. I am "shipping them hard" as Moss would likely say. I am so seriously impressed with this book! For the first outing for this author, it's an amazingly creative, complex, and exceedingly compelling world she's made. So fun! So inventive! I cannot wait to read more of the series!

Out of the Shadows Shadowlands Book 1 eBook Ashlee Nicole Bye Reviews
Out of the Shadows is the first book in Shadowlands series by Ashlee Nicole Bye. This book reminds me a lot of City of Bones by Cassandra Clare but as the story develops more, you could see this is a very different book. They just have few similarities especially at the beginning of the book.
The setting takes place in Melbourne and as someone who used to live in Australia, I think the author does the place justice with her descriptive details. This book is eloquently written which helps me a lot in imagining the characters and The Shadowlands itself.
The main idea of this book is complex and unique, the plot is wonderful and the pace is consistent. The author clearly builds up the tension since from the beginning as a lot of mystery is being unveiled without any possible answer. I like that the author writes about the backstory of the characters; how Sachi lost her best friend, Gabe in front of her own eyes. It just makes the characters development is more prominent. I like how the author interlaces romance elements between Sachi, Julian, and Moss but in the same time, it didnt take away from the focus of the story.
The only thing that Im not really a big fan of is that this story has a lot point of views; I was confused at the beginning of the story. Its hard for me to differentiate which character is involved with The Order and who isnt.
I honestly couldnt wait for the sequel and I hope that the second book will be as good or even better than this one. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who reads The Mortal Instruments series; you would be amazed by how creative the author gets with this book.
Australian author Ashlee Nicole Bye makes a stunning debut with OUT OF THE SHADOWS, which serves to introduce a series she has named SHADOWLANDS. It is that much sought after admixture of fantasy, paranormal themes and science fiction that is a genre mature young adults, especially, find fascinating to the point of obsession. Ashlee places her tale in her hometown of Melbourne allowing all of the fantasy aspects of her novel ring credible – as credible as fantasy can be!
One of the many joys of Ashlee’s writing style is the degree of eloquence that pervades even the opening Preface – a technique designed to seduce the reader into the long story ahead ‘Once, there was nothing but shadows. An entire world made only of darkness, absent of all light. One day, so it is said, a star exploded to set the darkness aflame and with the light came life. Creatures of all shapes and sizes came into existence, with names like angel, demon, faery, and dragon. They existed together peacefully, these new creatures of The Shadowlands. Until, eventually, they did not…’
Then she invite the mystery that is to come with the opening paragraphs – ‘As Julian studied the mangled remains of the boy who had once been Campbell Locke, it was easy to see how the humans could have mistaken the death for a homicide. The latest in a string of vicious murders by the now infamous ‘Melbourne Slasher’, who had plagued the streets of this city for near on three months now—or so the papers said. The teenager’s throat had been slashed with what, to human eyes, looked like a knife. But Julian knew better—that wound was the result of an incredibly sharp claw.’
The complex and involving story is well distilled in the synopsis the author provides – ‘From the streets of Melbourne to the bowels of Westminster, the delicate balance between life and death that is so painstakingly maintained by the reapers of The Order of Dark and Light is being tested by the return of an ancient threat. Tensions are rising within the hidden world of The Shadowlands and if this threat is not contained war will be inevitable. And the destruction of the human world is bound to follow in its wake.
