A good dad and some good history of California how and when it was settled and by whom. To the victor goes the spoils.
This was the first western by this author. I have to say it was a great read. I did not care for the ending. I guess I expected something different..but it still gets 5 stars..
I enjoyed this story for it's historical significance, I learned some things about the transition of California into a State. The insight into the lives of the Spaniards of California was interesting and illustrated the gulf between the cultures which sadly was not resolved very well. The ending is a surprise since it isn't exactly happily ever after but, undoubtedly realistic.
A bit rambling at times, but a good waste of time for the money spent. I thought the very end was rather senseless though to kill off a good character for no reason.
Pretty good story, started off very slow. Tells of what a woman can get a man to do for her love.
Western books have always been among my favorite reading. This excellent writer takes you down a slightly different path from what is expected. Plenty of action and an interesting story line.
Written by a man with an understanding of human nature, and a tolerance of weakness in both men and women.
